How to crochet the Amigurumi Axolotl
To crochet the head of the axolotl
round 1 – 6 sc (6 sts)
round 2 – 6 increases (12 sts)
round 3 – sc, inc 3 times (18 sts)
round 4 -2 sc, inc x 6 (24 sts)
round 5 – 3 sc, inc x 6 (30 sts)
round 6 – 4 sc, inc x 6 (36 sts)
round 7 – 5 sc, inc x 6 (42 sts)
round 8 – 14 – 1 sc in each st (42 sts)
round 15 – making a mouth in this round, 1 sc in first 17 sts working under both loops, then work 1 sc into the next 8 sts, working in the back loop only, then 1 sc in the last 17 sts working under both loops.
round 16 – making a mouth in this round 1 sc in first 16 sts working under both loops, then work 1 sc into the next st, working in the back loop only, then 1 sc in the last 8 sts working under both loops, then work 1 sc into the next st, working in the back loop only, then work 1 sc in the last 16 sts working under the last 15 sts working under both loops.
round 17 – 1 sc in first 17 sts working under both loops, then work 1 sc into the next 8 sts, working in the back loop only, then 1 sc in the last 17 sts working under both loops.
add safety eyes between rows 9 and 10

front legs – Make 2 front legs
six inches in between in line with the mouth
round 18 – 1 sc in each st (42 sts)
round 19 – 1 sc in each st (42 sts)
round 20 – 5 sc, dec x 6 (36 sts)
round 21 – 4 sc, dec x 6 (30 sts)
round 20 – 3 sc, dec (24 sts)
round 21 – 2 sc, dec (18 sts)
add fiberfill to the head before starting the next round where the body starts, will not be fastening off to make the body yet
body begins in the next round 22
round 22 – 3 sc, inc 6 times (24 sts)
round 24 – 1 sc in each st (24 sts)

round 26 – 4 sc, inc 6 times (30 sts)
round 27 – 5 sc, dec x 6 (36 sts)
round 28 -33 – 1 sc ins each st

round 53 – 1 sc, dec (12 sts)
round 54 – dec 6 times (6 sts)
then fasten off leaving a tail to weave in and out of the 6 sts to close up.
chain 10, sl st in first 3 ch for first toe, * then ch 5, slip st in 2nd chain from hook, then sl st in the next 4 sts for 2nd toe * then repeat from * to * for the 3rd toe, then for the fourth toe ch 4, then sl st in 2nd ch from hook then sl st in next 2 st for 4th toe.
pickup a loop 3 times in the ends of the toes to create the palm, you will have 4 loops on the hook after picking up the 3 loops, then yo and pull through all 4 loops, then sc in the 6 ch working towards the first ch from the beginning of the work furthest from the toes.
then ch 7, sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and then 1 sc in the next 5 ch then sew together to create the arm working through the front loops.
back legs – Make 2 back legs
chain 10, sl st in first 3 ch for first toe, * then ch 5, slip st in 2nd chain from hook, then sl st in the next 4 sts for 2nd toe * then repeat from * to * 2 more times for the 3rd toe and 4th toe, since the back legs have one more toe than the front legs ( the front legs of an axolotl have 4 toes and the back legs have 5 toes) then for the fifth toe ch 4, then sl st in 2nd ch from hook then sl st in next 2 st for 4th toe.
pickup a loop 4 times in the ends of the toes to create the palm, you will have 5 loops on the hook after picking up the 3 loops, then yo and pull through all 4 loops, then sc in the 6 ch working towards the first ch from the beginning of the work furthest from the toes.
then ch 7, sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and then 1 sc in the next 5 ch then sew together to create the arm working through the front loops.
For the gills for the head (make 6)
with the lighter pink yarn, ch 8, then sc in the second ch from hook, then sc in the next ch, then 2 hdc in the next 3 sts, then 1 dc into the next 2 sts.
then fasten off.
change to the second color to make the fringe part of the gills
attach the new color darker pink yarn with a slip st then ch 3, sl st in the 2nd ch from hook, then sl st in next ch, then sl st back into the same joining st, then sl st in next st, then ch 4, sl st in the 2nd ch from the hook, then sl st in the next 2 sts, then sl st into the st * then sl st in next st, ch 3, sl st in 2nd ch from the hook, then sl st into the st, then sl st in next st, then sl st back in to the st, then sl st in next st, then ch 4, then sl st into the 2nd st from the hook, then sl st into the next 2 st, then sl st back into the st, then sl st in next st, ch 3, sl st in 2nd ch from the hook, then sl st into the st, then sl st in next st, then sl st back in to the st, then sl st in next st, then at the top, sl st into the next st, ch 4, then sl st into the 2nd ch from the hook, then then sl st into the next 2 st, then sl st back into the st, , then sl st in next st, ch 3, sl st in 2nd ch from the hook, then sl st into the st, then sl st in next st, then sl st back in to the st, then sl st in next st, sl st into the next st, ch 4, then sl st into the 2nd ch from the hook, then then sl st into the next 2 st, then sl st back into the st, then sl st in next st, ch 3, sl st in 2nd ch from the hook, then sl st into the st, then sl st in next st, then sl st back in to the st, then sl st in next st, sl st into the next st, ch 4, then sl st into the 2nd ch from the hook, then then sl st into the next 2 st, then sl st back into the st, then sl st in next st, ch 3, sl st in 2nd ch from the hook, then sl st into the st, then sl st in next st, then sl st back in to the st, then sl st in next st, then cut the yarn and fasten off.

with the light pink yarn
row 1 – ch 30, start in the 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in the first 11 sts. then 1 dc in the next 7 sts, then 1 dc in the last 11 sts, ch 1 turn (29 sts)
row 2 – sc, hdc, 2 dc in next st , 2 tr, 2 dc, hdc, sc, hdc, 2 dc, 2 tr, 2 dc, hdc, sc, (this next part starts the bottom center)(the next st has 3 sts ) 1 hdc and 2 dc into same st, then 3 tr into the next st (this it the st at the bottom) (the next st has 3 sts, 2 dc and 1 hdc into the same st, sc, hdc, 2 dc, 2 tr, 2 dc, hdc, sc, hdc, 2 dc, 2 tr, 2 dc, hdc, sc
row 3 switch to the darker pink color
sc, hdc x 3, 2 dc x 2, hdc 3 x, sc, hdc 3 x, 2 dc x 2, hdc x 3, sc, hdc, 2 hdc x 2, at center dc tr dc, 2 dc x 2, hdc x 3, sc, hdc x 3, sc, hdc 3 x, 2 dc x 2, hdc x 3, sc
fasten off
sew the dorsal fin at bottom.
